For senior Dom Brown, leadership is not only a part of football, but a key to success off the field as well.
“The lessons you learn in football can carry on to later experiences in life,” Brown said. “Being viewed as a leader on the team has shown me what responsibility toward others means,” Brown said
Due to Brown’s leadership skills, he has been selected for the Steelers All-Peer Team.
The All Peer-Team is organized by the Steelers, the Post-Gazette and a local organization called the Mentoring Partnership. Mike Marchinsky, senior manager of alumni relations and youth football for the Steelers, echoed Brown’s belief in the power of leadership.
“The game of football instills valuable skills that go far beyond the field,” Marchinsky said. “We hope to help provide a blueprint for our recognized players’ teammates – to see that going above and beyond and doing the extra things can impact an entire team and community.”
Kristan Allen, associate executive director for the Mentoring Partnership, said the All-Peer Team emphasizes the importance of teens supporting each other.
“Positive peer relationships are essential to young people’s growing, learning and thriving,” Allen said. “We hope the Steelers All-Peer Team helps student athletes everywhere recognize the opportunity they have to support their peers.”
Baldwin Athletic Director Anthony Cherico said Brown was a great selection for the program.
“Dom is a great kid. He’s a good leader. I know he’s respected by his teammates and his coaches,” Cherico said.
Brown plays linebacker and offensive line for the Highlanders. He said being dedicated is essential in life.
“Be selfless, and when you show up, remember that you’re not just playing for yourself, but your team,” Brown said. “Even on days that you’re sick and days that you’re tired or hurt, you must go out there and practice hard for the guy next to you.”
Cherico credited Brown’s work ethic as a contributing factor to his success. In addition to being a leader on the football team, Brown also is the treasurer of the National Honor Society and a multimedia editor on the Purbalite.
Previous Baldwin football players who have been selected to the All-Peer Team include Andrew Sharp and Keith Mincin.
With Brown’s selection, Baldwin’s athletic program will receive a $1,000 donation. Brown’s name will be announced during a Steelers game at an unspecified future date, and he will attend the game for free.
