Through the tears and the joy, the touring production of Hamilton has a perfect cast to bring a familiar story to life.
The musical is appearing at the Benedum through Sunday. Although the lyrics written by Lin Manuel Miranda are already powerful on their own, these actors make them all the more powerful.
Lauren Mariasoosay, as Eliza Hamilton, does a particularly good job. Her voice is beautiful as she portrays the only character who does not rap. She sings notes that are so long and high during “Burn” that her mic crackled.
Although the set and plot of the musical is already very well known, the actors bring their own twist to the humor of the musical.
King George is played perfectly by Justin Sargent. Not only are Sargent’s vocals impressive, but he brings the perfect humor and sass to a sometimes sad and realistic musical.
The ensemble is also not given enough recognition for how much work they do. On top of dancing and sometimes singing for small roles, they are constantly moving sets and keeping the flow of the musical.
It is very impressive to see the actors pull off the rotating stage. It can be used to change scenes, but it is best used during “The Schuyler Sisters” to introduce the busyness of the town and introduce the main actors.
Overall, this cast puts on a beautiful performance without repeating the original version. Over the weekend, four more shows will be playing to finish out the cast’s time in Pittsburgh.
