High-profile rookies have helped the WNBA reach record TV ratings, but many sports fans forget about the veteran players who are also high achievers, like A’Ja Wilson.
Wilson plays for the Las Vegas Aces and she has been dominant: Playing in the league for seven years, she has won the MVP award three times, including this year. Wilson also won MVP in 2020 and 2022, and this year became the fourth player ever to win this award three times.
The other players in the running for this award were Napheesa Collier from Minnesota, Breanna Stewart from New York, Caitlin Clark from Indiana, and Alyssa Thomas from Connecticut.
But the vote for Wilson was unanimous – just the second unanimous vote in the history of the WNBA.
She was named MVP for good reason, averaging 26.9 points, 11.9 rebounds, and 2.6 blocks per game. Wilson also was the first to break 1,000 points in a single season, establishing a new league single-season scoring record of 1,021 points.
She also became the first player to lead the league in points, rebounds, and blocks in a single season, and she scored 20 points in every game but four this season.
Many new fans are not as familiar with players who have been in the league for a long time, but everyone should pay more attention to them, especially Wilson.
She is a threat defensively by being consistent with her blocks, and she is a great player offensively, as seen with her scoring. Even though she plays a center/forward, she can shoot and make three-pointers consistently.
Currently, her Las Vegas Aces are ranked fourth in the playoffs, having just defeated the Seattle Storm to bring them into Round 2.
Wilson has had an incredible season and is expected to do very well throughout the playoffs, maybe even leading her team to the finals.
