Senior Mary Vargo scored and freshman goalkeeper Evelyn Johnson earned a shutout as Baldwin girls soccer beat Mt. Lebanon 1-0 on Monday night, giving the Highlanders their first win over the Blue Devils since 2019.
“It was a great feeling. Everyone was so excited and the bus ride back was very fun,” sophomore Laila Ruvolo said.
Both teams fought hard, but Vargo managed to score the game’s only goal. She ran down the right side of the field and made it look like she was going to go for a cross, but she ended up shooting the ball into the goal over the keeper’s head.
“It was an amazing shot outside the 18,” Ruvolo said. “She played a great and strong game.”
Senior Mia Beardsley agreed.
“It ended up being this great goal over the goalkeeper’s head into the left corner of the goal,” Beardsley said.
Johnson got the shutout in goal for the Highlanders.
“I felt proud to have helped out my teammates,” Johnson said.
Freshmen Tenely Fry and Reagan Aston-Reece made great defensive plays to keep Baldwin in the lead, Ruvolo said.
The team’s next game is against Connellsville at home on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
