The Netflix show Blue Eye Samurai follows Mizu, a mixed-race samurai, on her journey to get revenge on the few Europeans allowed into Japan during the Edo-period of isolation.
Mizu, voiced by Maya Erskine, is an incredibly complex character, from the way she gains information to how she interacts with those she allows to accompany her. She has had a fascinating mix of self-loathing and ideals drilled into her head from childhood, so it is thrilling to see Mizu contemplate the next move in her journey.
The smooth animation frames each scene incredibly well. As the show is helmed by a single creative team, the characterizations and writing is consistent throughout. It is refreshing to see a unified approach to a show, especially one on Netflix.
There is a consistent sense of tension and attention to detail maintained throughout the show that engages the audience.
Netflix confirmed season two, but it is not expected until at least 2026.
