Senior Marcus Toto is headed to states after finishing second in triple jump at the track individual WPIALs this week.
“It was a great experience for my last time being there,” Toto said.
He said that the rest of the team also did well, even though WPIALs are difficult since “everyone is trying their best to get to states.”
Toto experienced leg cramps throughout his other events, so they did not go as well, he said. He plans to keep working hard for states so that does not happen there.
I have to “keep practicing and keep hydrating so I don’t cramp again,” he said. “Stay positive and get ready to compete against the best people in the state.”
Toto will leave for states this Thursday, competing May 24 and 25 in Shippensburg. He plans to continue his track career after high school at Kent State.
Senior Brooklyn Lucas also medaled, placing seventh in shot put and 12th in javelin. Lucas threw 35 feet and 6 inches in shot put and was happy with her results.
“I would say I competed very well and was able to keep up my part,” she said.
The WPIAL competition started on Wednesday, but due to thunderstorms, many events were postponed to Thursday.
“Given the weather circumstances, I feel I did pretty well,” Lucas said.
Among other Baldwin athletes, sophomore relay runner Mackenzie Bowen stood out, Lucas said.
“It’s really nice to see her passion for the sport and her ability to take on two spring sports,” she said. “If she wasn’t on the field for softball, she was on the track.”
Lucas will continue throwing at West Liberty University next year.
