Nothing More brought a high-energy show to Stage AE on Mother’s Day.
They opened their performance with ”If it Doesn’t Hurt,” one of the singles off their upcoming album. From the moment they came out on stage, they brought a loud and energetic show.
Often, the sound at Stage AE’s indoor shows is not the best because of the echo, especially for louder shows. But the sound for this show was great. The bass- and drum-heavy music did not drown out the vocals.
Nothing More played through a set from each of their two latest albums, Spirits (2022) and The Stories We Tell Ourselves (2017). In between, they played “House on Sand,” the other single they have released off of Carnal, as well as an unreleased song.
The songs off the new album each bring a different sound and style, but they all came across impressively in the live performance.
The first opening band, Sleep Theory, also was great. They have very few songs out, but the stage presence of the entire band was excellent.
The levels and variation in their music make this a band one to watch in years to come.
The second band, Veil of Maya, was very heavy. Their music made for an entertaining time in the pit for fans, but it does not seem to hold much value outside of a concert setting.
However, the band did a great job at getting the audience excited for Nothing More.
After Veil of Maya’s set, there was an interlude for the crew to change the set. In the middle of Seal’s “Kiss From a Rose,” the house lights shut off and their set began.
The surprise transition was incredible and the band found many other ways to uniquely keep the audience’s attention through their set.
Nothing More did the expected drum solo, but they put their own spin on it. The lead singer had his own small drum kit and he did a drum war with the drummer. This kept it engaging.
Since it was Mother’s Day, the band dedicated a performance of “Fade In/Fade Out” to mothers. While the song is about the relationship between a father and son, it was a touching song about family to slow down the show.
To end the show, Nothing More did not do the typical fake out to the encore. Instead, they increased the intensity and volume of the show. They gave drums to audience members in the pit to hold above their heads, and the vocalist, guitarist, and bassist sat on the edge of the stage and played.
There was no break in the show. It kept the audience’s energy up, and it was incredible. Nothing More put on an excellent live show that elevated their already good music.
Nothing More’s album Carnal will be released on June 28.
