Junior midfielder Aliza Very scored six goals and set a scoring record for Baldwin girls lacrosse on Monday as the Highlanders fell to Fox Chapel, 20-11, in their final game of the season.
Very said that she and her teammates put a lot of effort into those scoring opportunities.
“I really had to create opportunities for myself and worked off my teammates’ (plays) to create them,” Very said.
Very scored 34 goals this season, bringing her career total to 76. The previous Baldwin record was 74.
She has big ambitions for her senior season.
“My goal for my high school career and senior season is to score 100 (total) goals,” Very said.
Her teammates were happy about her accomplishment.
“We are all very excited for her and extremely proud as she is achieving great things,” senior attacker Tiana Blount-Muscarella said.
Athletic Director Anthony Cherico is excited for Aliza and about what is to come in the future for Baldwin girls lacrosse.
“I think yesterday was a great day for her to break the record because it was youth recognition night. There were so many young lacrosse players there that got to see that, which I think got them excited about the sport,” he said.
Cherico is confident Very will accomplish scoring 100 goals next season. As a former math teacher, he said it’s also exciting to see how far his former students, such as Aliza, have come.
Blount-Muscarella said moving the ball around and creating opportunities is something the team has improved upon from the beginning of the season.
“The team did really well at moving the ball around on offense and communicating,” Blount-Muscarella said.
Junior goalkeeper Addison Giglione also “did really well, as she has a lot of good saves in net,” Blount-Muscarella said.
Fox Chapel did well with fast breaks, which Baldwin could not always keep up with, Blount-Muscarella said.
Blount-Muscarella was feeling emotional finishing out her season with last night’s game.
“As a senior, this season meant a lot to me, as we have really shown growth as a team. I am really going to miss my girls and will forever have a love for Baldwin lacrosse,” she said.
