Both the boys and girls track teams won their season-opening section meet against Thomas Jefferson on Thursday.
The boys team won 103-47, and the girls won 113-36.
Sophomore Zach Lieu said that although the inclement weather had an impact on the teams’ performance, it did not stop them from winning.
“There’s a difference with people being cold – and the rain,” he said.
Senior Alayna Kercher also said that though the weather affected them, the teams fought through. Since both Baldwin teams earned enough points early in the meet, they knew they had won before the meet ended.
Lieu said that the runners did particularly well, especially freshman Jack Reichl. Senior Jonus Ruvolo also did well and got three first places, in the 100 meter, 200 meter, and the 4×100 relay, Kercher said.
Despite the weather, many runners achieved personal records, including both Kercher and Lieu.
“Personally, I PR’d in the 400. I dropped two seconds from the South Fayette meet,” Kercher said.
The teams have high hopes for their next meet.
“It’s a good start and things will probably get even better as time goes on,” Kercher said.
Their next meet is an invitational this Saturday at Baldwin.
