The Baldwin softball team lost to Seneca Valley, 8-5, on Monday.
From the start, the girls faced a challenge in Seneca Valley pitcher Lexie Haynes, a Clemson commit, but they were still able to get her out of the game early.
“Getting timely hits off of Lexie Haynes was really difficult because she could throw 70 miles per hour. But we were able to make them take her out after scoring four runs off of her in the first two innings,” senior Keira Platz said.
Platz said sophomore Avery Harrington started the rally against Haynes.
“Avery was able to get good timely hits and get on base while bringing in the runs. She got everyone pumped up and ready to go so more of us could get good hits,” she said.
Senior Anna Schumacher was proud of the team for never losing energy throughout the game.
“We competed the entire game. I do not think there was a single girl sitting down the entire game,” Schumacher said.
However, Seneca Valley was still able to overcome Baldwin by not giving up when they were down.
“When they got down, they came back ready. All it took was one inning and they just kept getting hits and knew how to compete with us,” Platz said.
Schumacher believes that the girls just need to start taking everything one play at a time and not falling under pressure, she said.
Even with the loss, Platz thinks that their performance is a sign that the team is trending in the right direction.
“We have made a lot of progress from last year. We are really competing with teams like Seneca Valley more than we did last year,” Platz said.
Their next game is Wednesday at Pine Richland.
