Baldwin varsity softball defeated West Mifflin 5-2 in the first regular season game on Saturday.
Junior Kaylee Smolko hit a three-run home run for the Highlanders.
“I was happy that I could contribute to my team, and it made the game a whole lot better for me,” Smolko said.
There were some setbacks during the game, but Baldwin was able to push through them.
“The umpires were giving us really bad calls, and I thought we did a good job of overcoming that and not letting it get into our heads,” senior Keira Platz said.
The Highlanders were able to keep up their energy the entire game.
“We were always up on the fence cheering for each other, and we had some well timed hits,” Platz said.
This is a promising start for Baldwin varsity softball.
“There’s always stuff to improve upon, but I think this game was a really good game,” Platz said.
The team’s next game is at 5 p.m. Tuesday home against South Fayette.
