Seven Baldwin wrestlers qualified for individual WPIALs at the Southern section meet over the weekend, and senior Keith Mincin won his section outright, wrestling in the 160 weight class.
Mincin went 3-0 on the weekend. He is now one win away from 100 career wins.
Junior Ramil Islamov took second place in the 133 weight class. He was followed by his teammates, seniors Owen Klodowski and Lachin Islamov, both placing third in their respective classes.
Sophomore Mike Shoeb and senior Mario Del Rosario also placed, advancing them into the WPIAL playoff.
Moving forward, Baldwin’s wrestlers hope to keep their momentum going.
“Seven people advanced, so we should be coming into WPIALs strong. We want to make a name for ourselves this year,” Mincin said.
Schoeb agreed.
“We’ve wrestled hard all year long and now we just need to focus on WPIALs,” Schoeb said.
Both Mincin and Schoeb said the competition rises as the year goes on.
“I had two very hard-fought matches – two went into overtime. This time of year is always the hardest,” Mincin said.
“The competition was at a much higher level, they are all great wrestlers there,” Schoeb said.
The boys will compete this weekend at WPIALs hosted at Canon-Mcmillan. The top four from each weight class will advance to the state playoff.
