Junior Abby Rexrode was named all-around champion for the third time at the gymnastic WPIALs on Saturday, and the Highlanders placed third in the team event Friday.
Rexrode competed in all four individual events and placed first on three of them: vault, floor, and bars. She placed eighth on beam.
On vault, she scored her personal highest score of 9.775 out of 10.
“I was really happy with how I did,” Rexrode said. “I did have a fall on beam, but I was pretty proud of myself for everything else.”
Junior Annabelle Herrle congratulated Rexrode on her accomplishment.
“She is a very good gymnast and she works very hard. She is the least cocky person and very humble about it too,” Herrle said.
Herrle noticed Rexrode was in her element at the meet.
“Abby nailed two of her tricks — a double (twist move) on floor, and pack (a type of release) on bars,” Herrle said.
Herrle was also happy with her personal performance, taking sixth place with her floor routine.
“I had a pretty good meet all around,” Herrle said of her performance. “It was the best I did all season. My bar and beam scores were the highest they’ve been.”
Rexrode and Herrle competed in the top division, Diamond, alongside junior Sophia Rossa, who took fifth on beam.
In the Gold division, senior Ashley Brown got sixth on beam, sophomore Jewels Stevens got fourth on bars, and freshman Gabby Shipley placed sixth on bars.
In the Silver division, Baldwin was strong on bars, with sophomore Ella Scurry placing second, freshman Charlotte Fauls placing fourth, and sophomore Vivien Skalos placing fifth.
In the team event, the girls placed third. This qualifies them for the state competition, next weekend at Moon Area High School.
Rexrode is proud to be part of the team.
“The team is very supportive,” Rexrode said. “We all just get each other through it, and it makes gymnastics fun.”
