The Baldwin boys and girls swim teams both lost to Gateway at home on Thursday.
Junior Spencer Maist believes that both teams’ energy could have been better.
“There was not as much cheering as there should have been given the great swims,” Maist said.
Junior Nathaniel McWilliams said Gateway was a competitive and strong team.
“The other team had some really strong swimmers in all events and consistently had good starts and turns,” McWilliams said.
Maist said several of the boys had strong performances.
“For WPIALs, Evan (Stokes) is now going to be racing in yet another event and I made a personal best time in the 100 backstroke, missing the qualifying time by only .48 seconds, ” Maist said.
The boys 200-meter freestyle relay qualified for WPIALs as well.
Senior Alayna Kercher said the team needs to work on the fundamentals.
“I think as a team we need to work on our dives, flips, and turns to make our races better,” Kercher said.
Kercher said that even though the end result was a loss, the girls still put in a great effort.
“Since it was our last home meet of the season, I think everyone went out and tried their best,” she said.
Kercher was able to have one of her best swims last night.
“I swam my best 500-meter last night by dropping 17 seconds,” Kercher said.
The boys and girls will take on West Mifflin on Tuesday.
