I/O by Peter Gabriel is a good listen, but it does not offer as much as it should for an album that has been in production for over 27 years.
The album features 12 tracks, each one featuring a “Bright Side” and “Dark Side” mix. The two mixes are distinct, but both mostly sound the same. The album combines art pop and art rock styles.
“Panopticom” is a great opening track, and both mixes have a great melody and vocals. It has strong themes of information and technology as it is inspired by Gabriel’s Panopticon project, a global data-sharing concept.
As the title track, “I/O” leaves much to be desired. The melody is pretty simple and does not have much depth. While the vocals sound quite nice, the lyrics are pretty repetitive.
Most songs on the album are good, but at 68 minutes per mix the album feels dragged out. Most songs on the album are longer than they need to be. It is hard to sit down and listen to the whole album because of how long and repetitive it is.
The album is pretty good, but it does not have any outstanding tracks. It is worth listening to for fans of Gabriel’s music.
