The Baldwin boys wrestling team secured a playoff spot by upsetting Canon-Mac 40-29 in its match on Wednesday.
Seniors Keith Mincin, Andrew Sharp, and Tyler Carter, junior Ramil Islamov, and sophomore Mikey Shoeb all had big wins in the match. Mincin dominated his match, winning in the first period by pin.
“I started out strong and was able to have a quick ending to my match,” he said. “We just kept rolling with the wins.”
Carter said his match went really well as he maintained control all the way through.
“I went out and wrestled hard,” Carter said. “I was pushing the pace and even for my second year, I was keeping up with my opponent.”
Mincin thought that winning this match helps the team mentally move forward.
“It definitely gives us a great feeling for next week,” he said. “An upset like that doesn’t always happen every season.”
Carter thinks it is a step in the right direction for the rest of the year.
“This win was everything for the team,” he said. “For the past couple years we have been trying to make the playoffs, and with that win last night, against a really good team, we got it done.”
Even with the big win, Carter sees an opportunity to become even better.
“We still have a lot of inconsistency throughout,” he said. “I believe soon enough we will have this boat rolling and be a very hard team to beat moving forward.”
The Highlanders’ next match is at Upper St. Clair on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
