The Steelers clinched a playoff spot with a 17-10 win over the Ravens on Saturday and a loss by the Jaguars on Sunday, but they now face a tough challenge in the Buffalo Bills this weekend.
The Steelers, who are 10-7 on the year, have been through a lot of ups and downs throughout the season. They have beaten opponents like the 13-3 Ravens and have lost to teams like the 4-13 Patriots. Consistently has not been a great word to describe the team this year to say the least.
After questionable play by Kenny Pickett and Mitch Trubisky earlier in the season, Mason Rudolph has led the team to three straight wins. The Steelers have yet to make a choice on a starting quarterback for Sunday’s wild card against Buffalo, but Rudolph should get the start.
Defeating the Bills will be a challenge.
Buffalo coming in at 11-6 on the season has also had its ups and downs. Quarterback Josh Allen has seen better days, but he is still one of the best quarterbacks in the league.
Allen, who has put his team on his back, had 29 touchdowns this year which was tied for fourth in the league. He was also in fourth for passing yards this year with a total of 4,306 yards. He has been the best part of their team this year, with star wide receiver Stefon Diggs having a down year.
The Bills also have a decent defense, coming in at ninth place overall in NFL rankings. If the Steelers do not come out of the gate with a hot start on offense, the Bills defense will shut them down quickly.
The Steelers will need the running game to continue its strong streak. Najee Harris just completed his third 1,000 yard season, and Jaylen Warren has proven himself as an NFL running back. Both will need to have a big game on Sunday.
The Steeler defense has been a strength, but Defensive Player of the Year candidate T.J. Watt got injured on Saturday. With Watt out, Minkah Fitzpatrick needs to make a long overdue strong return. Veteran Cameron Heyward also needs to take the lead role on the defensive line.
And of course whoever starts at quarterback for Pittsburgh will need to make key passes and lead the offense.
If Rudolph starts and continues his high level of play, the Steelers could pull off an upset. Something similar could be said for Kenny Pickett as well, but he has not played since Week 13.
