Baldwin’s wrestling team placed second for the first time in 20 years at the Bo Woods Tournament hosted by Indiana High school over the weekend.
Four wrestlers won the championship for their weight class: Senior Keith Mincin in the 160-pound class, senior Mario Del Rosario in the 152-pound class, junior Ramil Islamov in the 139-pound class, and senior Owen Klodowski in the 127-pound class.
Senior Lachin Islamov took third place in the 172-pound class.
Islamov was happy with the team’s performance.
“I thought we did a great job overall. This is the best we’ve done in a tournament in a while, so I’m really proud of that,” Islamov said.
Junior Garrett Gusten said the team’s performance was impressive.
“It is great. Everybody was happy on the ride home and spirits were up,” Gusten said.
Islamov thought that Seniors Mario Del Rosario and Lachin Islamov had especially strong performances.
“Mario and Lachin really surprised me with how well they did,” Islamov said.
Gusten noted areas the team will keep working on.
“We could improve in continuing wrestling regardless of the score or how good your opponent is, just wrestling off our backs,” Gusten said.
The team’s section record is 1-1 so far this season. Their next match is at home against Canon-McMillan on Wednesday.
