The girls basketball team beat Thomas Jefferson 46-41 on Tuesday.
The game was dominated by junior Mary Vargo, who made crucial plays for the team and propelled them to their win.
“Mary was the star player. She scored the most points and brought the most energy to the game,” senior Katie Lucarelli said.
Freshman Kelsey Meyer agreed.
“(Mary) definitely kept us really energized and made us work together and stopped them from scoring,” Meyer said.
Along with her overall dominance, Vargo also made the game-saving play, as she stopped a TJ player from scoring a game-tying three-pointer in the dying minutes, Meyer said.
Prior to the win, the team had been on a short losing streak, so the win put the team in a better place for the upcoming games.
“It felt really good to win because we lost our last three games, so winning really brought our confidence up,” Meyer said.
Even with the win, the girls are still looking to improve on their transitions and team chemistry, Lucarelli said.
The Highlanders play again at Latrobe on Thursday night.
