The esports Valorant team won its first playoff match on Wednesday, defeating Riverside High School, 2-0.
The playoff win propels the team into the next round. Senior and varsity player Annan Gurung cites teamwork as one big reason for the win.
“We played together as a team, and I think we showed a lot of our skill,” Gurung said.
The varsity team has five players.
“We have really good communication,” Gurung said.
Under Coach Nathan Elias, the team is heading into the next round with confidence. Elias feels good about the team’s chances.
“I think we have a pretty good shot. We don’t exactly know who we are playing yet, so we’ll wait until tomorrow to find out,” Elias said.
Gurung thinks that individual skills can be developed.
“Within the Valorant game itself, your character can have special skills called utilities. It’s a thing that helps you get an advantage. I think one thing that can be improved upon is that utility usage.” Gurung said.
Elias said that throughout the season, all of the players have grown individually and as a team.
“I think everyone on the team has shown great improvement over the course of this season both individually and as a team. The team’s communication has gotten stronger, and their ability to work together has also improved greatly,” Elias said.
The Valorant team will play in the second round of playoffs on Dec. 21.
