The Baldwin boys basketball team won a four-overtime thriller 67-56 against Fox Chapel on Friday.
At the end of regulation, Fox Chapel got an open three to send the game into its first overtime, with the game tied, 38-38.
The first three overtimes all had Fox Chapel getting last-possession shots to tie it late. In the fourth overtime, Baldwin was able to make some big shots, like junior Nate Wesling’s big corner three, and win the game.
Senior guard Nate Richards said it was the longest game he has been a part of.
“It was tiring for sure,” Richards said. “But I couldn’t let it get to me because we thought at the start of each overtime: `Just four more minutes.’ ”
Junior Caden Cherico agreed.
“For sure the longest of all our lives,” Cherico said.
He said the game was a big win to boost the team’s record.
“It was a huge win to make us 3-1 instead of falling to 2-2 for the second year in a row,” Cherico said.
Richards thought that Baldwin did great in the overtimes.
“After letting that lead go to end the fourth quarter, we knew we had to win this game no matter what,” he said. “We battled in every quarter and didn’t slow down.”
He thought that if it wasn’t for the Highlanders’ slow start on offense and Fox Chapel’s great defense, Baldwin could’ve had the game won earlier.
“They seemed to know what plays we were going to run every time down the court,” he said. “We have to be fast out the start to get ahead of teams early.”
The Highlanders play next on Tuesday at Bethel Park at 7:30 p.m.
