History teacher Katie Temme and her AP Government students think more teenagers need to vote. So this week, those AP Gov seniors are registering students during lunch periods.
“We believe it is part of our civic duty to vote,” Temme said. “We want as many young people to be involved in this process. There are not enough young people involved, and studies show that.”
Throughout the week, students involved in the AP Gov class have been encouraging seniors to register to vote.
“We are trying to get as many students who will be 18 by Nov. 7 to vote,” Temme said.
With some guidance, Temme let the students handle the promotion for the registration program. The AP Gov students are staffing a table outside of the cafeteria this week and informing others about the importance of voting.
Senior Mwango Kasuba helped organize the registration.
“We should all contribute to the betterment of our country and we can do that by voting,” Kasuba said.
The program’s student leadership has been essential, Temme said.
“This is an effort led by young people for young people. This is not a directive from your principal or your teacher – this is something they are doing for their own benefit,” Temme said.
Kasuba said registering is easy.
“Seniors may not know where to start or where to go when it comes to voting, so we give them a way to get registered. This way, they won’t have any problems with it later on,” Kasuba said.
The last day to register for the November election is Monday.
