After placing second in the section, senior Gabi Moder got to compete at the WPIAL singles tennis competition on Thursday, but she was eliminated in the first round.
There were 16 competitors at the event, four from each section. Moder was ready for the competition, which was held in Bethel Park.
“I wasn’t really intimidated,” Moder said. “I was just happy to have made it. I like to just go and try my best.”
For Moder, a winning attitude is critical to success.
“If you’re nervous, you tighten up and don’t play how you want to,” she said.
This wasn’t her first appearance at the competition.
“I made it last year for singles and doubles, and I made it the year before with doubles,” she said.
Moder has played tennis for 10 years. She started because of her aunt and uncle.
“My aunt and uncle played, and that got me into it,” she said. “And now I just love being a part of a team.”
Moder has firm plans to play in college.
“I just want to be part of a team continuing on,” Moder said.
