Netflix missing person doc is flawed
June 2, 2023
Fans of true crime documentaries likely will be a little disappointed with Netflix’s Missing: Dead or Alive?.
The documentary follows a group of South Carolina police officers who are investigating four different missing person cases in the span of the show’s four-episode run.
One of the cases involves Lorraine Garcia, a 61-year-old who went missing in 2021. Throughout the first episode, viewers follow Officer Vicki Rains as she investigates the disappearance. The somewhat surprising conclusion of the investigation is presented at the beginning of episode two.
The main drawback of the series is that the episodes feel scripted, which is something that a true crime documentary should not feel like.
Despite that, the cases that the officers explore are often intriguing, with satisfying conclusions to their stories.
So if viewers watch true crime for the investigation aspect, they will enjoy Missing: Dead or Alive for its missing person cases. If viewers like true crime for the truth aspect, though, they may want to move on to the next show.
