Big George Foreman is much more than the basic boxing movie as it seems at first glance.

The movie captures the entirety of George Foreman’s life, as it begins with the struggles of his childhood up through the successes and failures of his adult life as well.

Foreman, played by Khris Davis, is known for many things, including his grilling machine, his fights against Muhammad Ali, and being the oldest man to win a world heavyweight championship. While all of these things are portrayed in the movie, it also focuses a lot on one of Foreman’s most important values – his faith.

Throughout the beginning of the movie, Foreman’s mother, played by Sonja Sohn, mentions God and prayer several times, and everytime she does, Foreman has an annoyed look on his face. This foreshadows that it will become a larger issue later within the movie, creating suspense and adding depth to the plot.

The main focus of the movie, though at first it may seem that it is his boxing, is the religious aspect and how his faith and relationship with God impacts his boxing career and way of life.

Although this movie is a biography of Foreman’s life, one can interpret it as a Christian film, which is a lot different than what most viewers may expect while going into what they may think is just another boxing movie like Rocky or Southpaw

From a boxing standpoint, meanwhile, this movie is very fast paced, especially in the beginning.

At first, Foreman could not last more than a minute or two in the ring and stay competitive with his sparring partner. About 20 minutes later into the movie, he is achieving worldwide boxing success.

Some might argue that the movie is too fast paced. However, when the main idea of the movie is considered, the details of his athletic struggles do not matter as much as they would in a primarily boxing focused movie.

The film details the important times in Foreman’s life and is great to learn about his whole life, but the movie is not necessarily for someone looking to watch an action-packed boxing movie.
