Opinion: Billboard’s Hot 100 overtaken by big stars
April 17, 2023
Artists coming out with an album and then landing all those songs on Billboard’s Hot 100 list is a trend that has been growing in recent years.
This is mostly due to the growing popularity of using music streaming apps. These apps make it easy for listeners to just download an album and listen to it on repeat.
Some artists have recently shattered records on the Hot 100 list, such as Morgan Wallen getting 36 of his songs from the album One Thing at a Time on the chart.
Wallen has been comfortable sitting at the number one position on the Billboard list, having his song “Last Night” be number one for three weeks, but the song has been on the chart for 11 weeks.
Taylor Swift is another artist who has taken over the Hot 100 chart. Her Midnights record came out last October and immediately skyrocketed in popularity.
Prior to Swift’s album coming out, the artist with the most songs in the Top 10 of the Hot 100 chart was Drake, with nine songs all coming from his album Certified Lover Boy. Swift broke this record getting all 10 spots on the Hot 100, leading with her song, Anti-Hero.
The unfortunate side of these apps is that it is a lot harder to track what songs are and are not popular. Before apps, Billboard just had to look at the number of singles sold and judge it based on that. Nowadays, people have many different ways to listen to music; therefore, the number of times a song has been bought or streamed becomes much harder.
The downside with big artists taking over the Hot 100 chart is it does not provide smaller artists the opportunity to break out and make a name for themselves.
Previously, it was an accomplishment to get five songs on the Hot 100, so many artists, including newer ones, were able to get at least one song on the list. But when Wallen takes up 36 spots on that chart, many new artists miss out.
