Beach volleyball growing quickly at NCAA level
March 27, 2023
While indoor college volleyball has become one of the most competitive sports in the NCAA for women, beach volleyball is getting more attention than ever.
NCAA beach volleyball is one of the fastest growing sports. It first debuted in 2011 as a club sport with only 15 teams. Now in 2023, there are 92 NCAA-affiliated teams.
These players need a lot of skill to play in the sand – a practice that helps those players who compete the traditional indoor volleyball season as well.
Ever since the beach program started up, indoor volleyball players have begun playing in their school’s beach programs to carry their skills further. The amount of athleticism this sport requires makes beach volleyball harder than indoor volleyball.
In beach volleyball, only two players are allowed to play at a time, compared to a rotation of six who can rotate in and out of indoor positions. Indoor requires certain players to play certain positions on the court, but on the beach a player has to be good in every position.
Beach requires players who go for anything and are willing to play in extreme conditions. It is a game of control and having great chemistry with your partner.
Now that beach volleyball has become one of the top sports in the NCAA spring season, many younger players who want to play volleyball in college have two different routes they can go.
Beach volleyball is not only creating more competition, but it is growing the sport more than ever. Playing beach gives players more confidence in their skills.
As the years go on, volleyball has gotten more popular, and now, having a beach program in the spring, provides so many opportunities. Being a beach player allows players to become consistent and a well-rounded player. Beach is the future of volleyball and it will only go up from here.
