Yves Tumor returns with euphoric “Praise”
March 22, 2023
Sean Bowie, who’s artistically known as Yves Tumor, maintains their consistent quality of work on their stellar new album, Praise A Lord Who Chews But Which Does Not Consume; (Or Simply, Hot Between Worlds).
As wordy of a title as the album has, it has a digestible run-time of 40 minutes and every single minute is euphoric. Every sound in Bowie’s arsenal is specially honed in on this LP: “Interlude” mirrors their earlier ambient works; “Purified by the Fire” has the grandiosity of some of their deep cuts, and “Parody” is a dreamy alternative rock track. Bowie also explores folk elements in “Meteora Blues” intertwined with their usual sound.
The album’s intro, “God Is a Circle,” immediately pulls in listeners with an unsettling sample of someone yelling and a pulsing percussion sound. It’s both a minimalistic song – in terms of vocals – and maximalist in its production.
When asked what the song is about, Bowie said, “It’s about a lack of understanding myself and avoiding the darker more sinister thoughts, and the full-blown serotonin… and just lingering in the middle where it feels safe and a little bit confusing.” The conflicting ideas of evil and happiness Bowie expresses can be easily discernible considering the upbeat instrumental paired together with their monotone vocals.
Bowie’s performance on the album is captivating from start to finish. They exclusively worked with Grammy-winning producer Noah Goldstein, who’s most known for his contributions to Kanye West’s industrial Yeezus record, on this album.
Compared to their past works, this is simultaneously Bowie’s most hard-hitting and poppiest album. Simply put, it is worth a listen.
