Netflix’s new docu-series The Romantics tells the success story of a man who defined Hindi cinema.

The documentary shows viewers the rise of the late Yash Chopra, an influential director and producer, and how his movies became household names for Bollywood fans.

Chopra, also known as the father or king of romance, was ahead of his time in creative thinking. While much of the industry was focused on action-oriented films, Chopra found a breakthrough with heroine-oriented, romantic, and emotionally driven melodic movies.

The four-part series explains Chopra’s filmmaking techniques, which became the blueprints of the Indian film industry for decades to come. It also doesn’t shy away from discussing heated topics like nepotism.

The Romantics celebrates the highs and lows of Chopra’s career with photographs, home videos, and clips of famous names, including Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, and Ranveer Singh, who talk about the films that inspired them.

The docu-series is also the first form of media to ever interview the head of YRF Studios, Yash Chopra’s son, Aditya Chopra, who is carrying his father’s legacy through his own work.

The only way this documentary could have improved would have been to include more insight into the musical aspect of Bollywood and famous names tied to Chopra who didn’t get much screen time.

In all, the series itself is comforting yet informative, with many emotional and nostalgic aspects. It is a must-watch for Bollywood superfans and anyone who is remotely interested in the Hindi film industry.
