Queen’s Umbrella finds a royal mother trying to protect her kids
December 21, 2022
A scheming grandmother, five grand princes, and a mother who would do anything to protect them from the dangers of the palace: The newest Korean drama, Under the Queen’s Umbrella, focuses on a loving but hot-tempered queen who will do anything to protect her troublemaking children from their grandmother’s evil plans to dethrone them.
The parallel structure of the deposed Queen Yoon flows well with the queen’s storyline as the viewers look forward to how the queen saves the day in each episode.
Although deeply serious, there are many light-hearted interactions between the characters. It also contains positive transgender character representation through the character of Prince Gyeseong.
Kim Hye-soo thrives as Queen Im Hwa-ryeong. She embodies all the mannerisms to portray her character’s loving yet fierce personality.
Kim Hae-sook also does an excellent job of portraying the evil grandmother. Her aura is menacing in every frame she is in and the audience gets to see how much of an evil mastermind she is.
Ok Ja-yeon depicts the evil nature of the first junior consort extremely well, although at times it feels as if she is being typecast in these types of roles.
This drama is available to watch on Netflix.
