The San Francisco 49ers had found themselves in what many NFL executives would have considered a season-ending quarterback problem.

They have had their starting quarterback, Trey Lance, and backup quarterback, Jimmy Garoppolo, go down with season-ending injuries, leaving the season in the hands of rookie quarterback Brock Purdy.

This is not just any ordinary rookie, though. He is what NFL fans call Mr. Irrelevant, being the last pick in the 2022 NFL draft. Through all the odds, he has become quarterback one for a team with Super Bowl hopes.

Many fans thought their season ended when Garoppolo went down with an injury, but Purdy has been 3-0 in the games he has made an appearance in.

When he was subbed in against the Dolphins, fans had low expectations, assuming running back Christian McCaffrey would take over the game by being fed the ball every possession. Purdy was able to complete 25 of his 37 passes while throwing two touchdowns.

With the hope Garoppolo would be back the following week, the team was happy about Purdy’s performance and how he was able to handle himself in his first action in the NFL.

News soon came out that Garoppolo would be out longer than expected, which left the team to make a decision: Sign a new quarterback to take over for the rest of the year or hope that Purdy could continue his success from the previous game. They went with Purdy.

The following week, he went head-to-head with the greatest football player of all time, Tom Brady. Fans once again had low expectations and hoped that their defense would limit the Buccaneers scoring enough so McCaffrey could keep their offense up to par.

Purdy proved all the fans wrong.

He not only went on to win the game, but outplayed Brady, something many veteran quarterbacks have failed to do in their whole career. He completed 16 of 21 passes while again throwing two touchdown passes.

His poise and ability to control the game was shocking to many as he looked like a true seven-year veteran in the league. He made some passes that only a few quarterbacks in the league can make. He had finally had the chance to show the league his potential and put them all on notice.

Although he had a stellar game, he did get hurt on the second drive of the game, putting his availability for the next game in jeopardy.

All week, sources within the team said there was a very small chance that he would suit up and play, considering a rib injury can cause immense pain. Shockingly, the day of the game came and Purdy said he was ready to go and started the game.

A win on Thursday would’ve meant winning their division and guaranteeing them a spot in the playoffs.

And Purdy balled out again.

He completed 17 of the 26 passes he threw, once again showing confidence that not many players possess. Even with the team’s number one wide receiver Deebo Samuel out, he showed the league that he has the winning mentality teams need.

Purdy proved to himself and the league that he could be a future starter for a team soon. This now gives the 49ers a whole lot of options on what they can do when free agency comes around in 2023.

The 49ers now are Super Bowl favorites in many people’s eyes, almost looking like a repeat of the 2018 Philadelphia Eagles with Nick Foles overcoming the odds and winning the Super Bowl.

As it stands for Purdy, he has officially become Mr. Relevant.
