Girls basketball came out with a win in their game on Monday against Belle Vernon, with a final score of 57-43.

The girls limited the time they spent on defense with quick turnovers to offense. Junior guard Mallory Mezeivtch and sophomore guard Mary Vargo agreed that the win could largely be credited to how well the girls worked the ball.

Also, the team did well with shooting.

“The shots were hitting all night long,” Vargo said.

Freshman Laci Bernotas stood out during the game by being one of the top scorers, along with senior Gianna Schoeb and junior Katie Lucarelli, Mezeivtch said.

“Laci, Gia, and Katie were all in the double digits for points. Laci went six for six for the shots she took,” Mezeivtch said.

Vargo said the Highlanders were running some new plays, but in the future, “when we know the plays, we will be so much better.”

Mezeivtch hopes that the girls could start off the game stronger in future games, and maintain it.

The next game is Thursday against Shady Side at Baldwin at 7:30 p.m.
