Opinion: Age is catching up with Brady, Rodgers
November 2, 2022
After last week’s Tampa Bay and Green Bay football games, it seems like age is getting to Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers, and that these future hall of fame quarterbacks should retire.
Quarterbacks like Josh Allen of Buffalo, Patrick Mahomes of Kansas City, Lamar Jackson of Baltimore, and Justin Herbert of the Chargers are going to be the new faces of the quarterback position. These quarterbacks play very differently than Rodgers and Brady do.
Rodgers and Brady are pocket passers, which means they stay inside the pocket while passing and do not have the legs to run.. Allen, Mahomes, Jackson, and Herbert play with more of a run-and-gun style of football, which means they get outside of the pocket to make plays with their arm or their legs.
Three of these young superstar quarterbacks are in the top five for passing yards. Allen has 2,198 yards, Mahomes has 2,159 yards, and Herbert has 2,009 yards. While Lamar Jackson is not top five in passing yards, he has 17 total touchdowns on the season with 15 passing and 2 rushing.
These quarterbacks overall have had a great start to their season, as Allen and the Bills are 6-1, Mahomes and the Chiefs are 4-2, and Herbert and the Chargers are 4-2. Jackson and the Ravens are 4-3, but their defense has lost them some games as they have had two games where it was a one-possession game.
Rodgers and Brady, meanwhile, have been struggling to meet their expectations. The Packers are 3-4 and the Buccaneers are 3-4. They are having decent seasons individually, but nothing like they have in the past.
Rodgers has thrown more interceptions this year (4) in seven games than he had last year in a whole 17-game season (3).
Obviously Rodgers does not have his past main target, Davante Adams, and their wide receiver one is Allen Lazard, who was the wide receiver two last year. But that should not matter, as Rogers has been known as one of the best quarterbacks in the league.
Brady has had some positives this year, with being second in passing yards, having nine touchdowns, and leading the league with only one interception.
Brady also has one of the top receiving corps in the league, with red-zone threat Mike Evans and a great route runner in Chris Godwin. These wide receivers have had many 1,000 yard receiving seasons. And although Brady has a deadly offense, his team is now 3-4 after a tough loss to the Ravens.
Pocket passing was the best way to play the quarterback position years ago. But now and into the future, football coaches will be looking for a guy who can create plays with his legs and arm, and one who has a run-and-gun style of quarterback play.
Age is catching up to Brady and Rodgers, and it is showing this year.
