After scoring three runs in the first inning, the Highlanders softball team defeated Thomas Jefferson, 5-2, on Wednesday.

“The top of our order, like Grace (Schumacher) and Brookelle (Holby), they hit some runners in,” senior Alexa Flavell said.

The Highlanders scored again in the third. They then allowed two runs, one in the fifth and another in the sixth. However, they rebounded with another run of their own in the seventh.

“We kind of held them after that, and our pitchers did really well yesterday,” Flavell said.

Though the team was hitting better than usual, they were most dominant on defense.

“We had a couple good tag plays,” Flavell said. “They made a lot of good catches, and we had a lot of good relays from the outfield to the infield.”

Still, the Highlanders know what to improve.

“(When) they switch pitchers during the innings, we just need to work on (adapting to) them,” Flavell said.

Flavell scored a run, along with Holby, Maleah Pacella, and Anna and Grace Schumacher.

“Everything was good yesterday,” Flavell said.

The team has 11 more games before season’s end. Their next game is today versus Peters Township.
