Indoor gym league offered new opportunities for girls soccer players
April 7, 2022
Although we did not have a winning record this past fall, Baldwin girls soccer continues to bring me fun times and wins during the off season.
Starting in January, girls from the Baldwin soccer team had the option to join a futsal league. Futsal is an indoor soccer league played on a gym floor. It allowed us to work on foot skills and play against other teams.
This league was something that the team loved doing together. It gave us the chance to get better at playing with each other, work on skills during the off season, and boost the morale and confidence of the team.
Throughout the 11 games, our team took home eight wins and three losses. We got to the championships and lost 6-5 in overtime against Winchester Thurston. Although we ended up losing, getting to the championship was an accomplishment in itself.
The schools we were playing against would not be in our section during our regular season, but we were still provided with competition and challenges throughout the league.
During the two months of weekly games, our team came together to play and have fun with each other while doing something we love. We took the league seriously and came out in second place overall.
Because of the size of the court, and only playing five players aside, everyone switches positions throughout the games. This gave me more opportunities to score a goal, because I am a defender in the regular season.
Baldwin girls soccer is not known for winning, but soccer and being on a team is not all about winning.
Futsal is something I love doing. It is a way for me to better my own skills, see my teammates during the off season, and stay active.
Our regular season games are tough, but leagues like futsal show that we can come together to overcome the hardships of the season, while enjoying the game.
