Indie rock band, “Widowspeak” is an exceptional new album

Lesser known indie rock band Widowspeak’s The Jacket is an exceptionally made alternative record.
The album begins with “While You Wait,” and listeners are met with its ethereal and inviting arpeggiated synth, which goes on throughout the song, underneath the singer’s soft vocals. The digestible, minimalist approach to the track’s lyrics lets listeners enjoy the instrumentation much easier.
“Unwind” is simply beautiful. The piano-guitar layering is greatly mixed. Around two and a half minutes into the song, the vocal layering comes in from nowhere and heightens the listening experience even more.
The whole project is calming, but “The Jacket” takes the cake, which is ironic because it begins with distorted guitar chords. The minimal lyrics on this are emphasized much more with its short, poem-length verses. Distorted chords, which were heard in the beginning, come back in the outro, but are far more repetitive and engaging.
There is not one bad song on this album. It’s soothing to listen to and influences of country twang are audibly heard in some of the songs with usage of distorted guitars occasionally. The album’s echoey vocals are also a plus.
Those who are not familiar with this band should listen to this album. Specifically, fans of acts like Men I Trust and Phoebe Bridgers would like the album’s sound – plus it’s not too long in duration.
