New viral word game Wordle offers quick, fun diversion

Put aside those word searches and crossword puzzles: A new word game is sweeping the world. Released in the fall, Wordle now has more than 2 million players worldwide.

To play the viral game, players have six tries to guess a mystery five-letter word. The word is always dictionary valid, and may repeat letters.

After guessing a word, the letters the player guessed will turn gray if the letter is not in the word at all; yellow if the letter is in the word but not in the correct place, and green if the letter is in the right place. The player wins the day’s puzzle if all five letters are green.

After either solving the puzzle or unsuccessfully guessing six times, a box appears with the player’s game statistics, including how many total days the player has competed; his or her solve rate; the player’s current streak for correctly guessing the word, and the player’s max streak for guessing words.

The game has a countdown until the player can try the next day’s puzzle. Players only have one word to guess a day, and every player guesses the same word. The puzzle resets every day, so players can guess a new word every day.

It also displays a share button, which copies the puzzle number, the player’s score out of 6, and colored box emojis based on which words the player has guessed correctly. This is so players can share (or brag) about their day’s score.

The game’s designer, Josh Wardle, has intended for Wordle to remain ad-free and free to play. There is no money involved, and no pop-up ads on the website.

Wordle only takes two to five minutes to play, and this is two to five minutes to de-stress while doing something fun and training your brain.

There is no app for Wordle. You can play it only at https://www.powerlanguage.co.uk/wordle/.
