Baldwin’s varsity ice hockey team picked up a huge 4-3 shootout win over first-place North Allegheny on Monday.

Goals were scored by seniors Carson Kress and Trevor Belak, as well as sophomore Tanner Plinta. Senior netminder Eddie Nowicki stopped 37 of the 40 shots that came to his crease in regulation.

The game was tied at the end of regulation, and no goals were scored in overtime. During the shootout, seniors Xander Aul and Belak scored for Baldwin, while Nowicki stopped all three shots he faced.

Senior Lorenzo Shipley said this was more than just a win for the team.

“It is a great feeling. We needed this game and we needed to beat the best team in the league, which is huge,” Shipley said.

Shipley said the adjustments the team made heading into this game were crucial.

“We played a complete game as a team and it was possibly one of our best games we’ve played so far this season,” he said.

Plinta said the team’s focus really helped them earn the victory.

“We just needed to be more focused before and during the game against NA, and it worked,” Plinta said.

The Highlanders have now beaten every team in the top five except for Pine-Richland.

“That says we know our potential, but everyone needs to contribute for the outcome we want,” Plinta said.

The next game will be at 9 p.m. Thursday away against Seneca Valley.
