The Baldwin girls varsity basketball team on Wednesday won their second game in a row, defeating Gateway 64-30.

This win makes the Highlanders’ record 2-1, all of them non-section games.

Baldwin’s emotions were high going into the game, and the team had a hot start.

“We all communicated very well and brought a lot of energy. We took the lead early on, which already made it tougher for Gateway to come back,” sophomore Katie Lucarelli said.

The Highlanders did not let up on the Gators last night.

“The turning point was definitely the third quarter. Sometimes when we are up we tend to take our foot off the pedal, but last night we pushed down harder and kept increasing the lead,” Lucarelli said.

Senior Morgan Altavilla knows how to handle the team, senior Alyvia Cox said.

“Morgan Altivilia stands out every game because she is such a good leader and she scores a lot,” Cox said.

With Baldwin being generally a young team, it is motivating for the older girls to see these young girls able to improve, Cox said.

For Lucarelli, there are positives and negatives to having a young team.

“Being a young team has its highs and lows. The lows are that we are not as experienced as some of the teams we play. The advantage of being a young team is being able to build our team now for the future. Also, we are full of energy and spirit,” Lucarelli said.

Baldwin plays its first section game against Peters Township at home at 7:30 p.m. tonight.
