New and old internet challenges create dangerous situations
September 24, 2021
The Devious Licks TikTok trend has students across the country stealing or vandalizing school property.
Although at first it was considered a joke by teens, students have been suspended from their schools or even arrested. This trend has cost school districts a lot of money and time to replace items students have stolen, and also inconveniences other students until the items are replaced.
This isn’t the first challenge trend to go viral. Back in August, the Milk Crate challenge had people stacking milk crates and attempting to climb them, even though it often ended in people falling and hurting themselves.
Pittsburgh Steelers receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster joined this trend, and he drew some criticism from people who said it was irresponsible to put himself at risk of injury before football season.
Several years before, the cinnamon challenge had people attempting to put a spoonful of cinnamon in their mouths. This challenge could cause choking, gagging, and a burning sensation in the chest, but viewers did not care.
Then there was the Tide Pod challenge, in which people would attempt to eat a Tide detergent pod, which could cause vomiting and lethargy, or even require the person to be put on a ventilator.
So these challenges have become a regular occurrence, but the question is why they become so popular.
The people who participate in the trends usually gain lots of followers, even though they are putting themselves in danger.
Whether it is to gain popularity, be perceived as cool, or just to do it for fun, teens usually do not think about the consequences of the challenges.
Some people enjoy the feeling of taking risks, while others enjoy watching other people do something risky.
But people let their own fun keep them from seeing dangers, or the real cost of their actions.
Teens do not realize the cost of these challenges, but the internet trends can cause a lot of inconvenience for others, and themselves.

Sara Great story …Very concise and to the point. All to often people do things because their peers are doing them without thinking about the end result which many times is injury.
