When most people think of Miley Cyrus, they think of her as a child actress turned pop star. But on her new album, she breaks away from the regular pop style many associate her with.

On Plastic Hearts, Cyrus showcases many types of songs: Country, punk, arena rock, industrial, disco, and power pop undertones are all heard throughout her album.

The song “Prisoner,” featuring Dua Lipa, sounds like a normal pop song one would hear on the radio, and in fact it sounds similar to Dua Lipa’s song “Physical.”

But Cyrus creates a different sound for each of her songs. On “Angels Like You,” she takes a refreshing approach by using a slower instrumental and singing in a soft voice.

On “Nightcrawler,” featuring Billy Idol, there are electronic beats and harsher vocals. This song is a great way to get pumped up and energetic.

“Never Be Me,” meanwhile, has a melancholic mood and a more peaceful instrumental. This song is ideal for background music or listening to when you are down.

As with so much music, some of these songs get old.  The distinctive instrumentals and vocals can be catchy, but they can get annoying quickly. Still, listeners likely will find themselves going back to this album for repeated plays.
