After a strenuous first half, the Baldwin girls basketball team headed into the locker room on Thursday night down 23-8 against Connellsville.

“We were too confident going into the game, and our shots weren’t going in throughout the entirety of the first half,” junior Alexis Bernotas said.

With some motivational words from Coach Kyle DeGregorio, the girls came out in the second half with more intensity — and pulled out a victory with a dramatic last-second shot.

“Last year we would have just put our heads down, but Coach Degregorio really inspired us to come back in the second half,” Bernotas said.

Junior Abby Marzina led the team to victory by hitting a buzzer beater.

“It was pretty incredible,” junior Cassandra Pantelis said. “They put up a good fight through the game, but Abby hitting that shot after a tied game really showed our growth from last year into this year,” Pantelis said.

The team currently has an overall record of 5-1 and a section record of 2-1.

The girls next game is after break against Mount Lebanon.
