Junior Connor Woods on Monday became the first golfer from Baldwin to qualify for WPIAL individual finals in five years.

Last week, Woods qualified for the semifinals along with senior captain Matt Fediaczko and about three dozen other golfers. On Monday, Woods finished 16th at semifinals and qualified for WPIAL finals, which will be held next Tuesday.

Woods said he drove the ball well on Monday. He credits Fediaczko and Coach Steve Sinning for his motivation.

“Matt is always supportive and motivates me and the team,” Woods said.

Coach Sinning credits Connor’s mental toughness, which allows him to overcome any mistakes.

“Connor’s determination towards the sport is what really helped him,” Sinning said. “This is rare in a golfer his age, and it’s something that I’m proud of.”

Woods said he will be golfing at team matches and also using the driving range during the week to prepare for WPIAL finals.

“I’m a little nervous, but I know it’s going to be a valuable experience,” Woods said.
