Rock will make a comeback eventually
March 26, 2019
Over much of the past five decades, rock was the most popular genre of music, with artists ranging from Elvis and the Beatles through Nirvana dominating the spotlight. But in recent years pop and hip-hop have dominated the music scene.
Artists such as Selena Gomez can rack up over 42 million monthly Spotify listeners, but most popular rock bands only have around 6 million monthly listeners. Even big names from the early rock era, like the Beatles or the Rolling Stones, only have around 11 million monthly listeners today.
In 2017, hip-hop and R&B surpassed rock as the most popular genre for the first time ever. The Top 10 album sales were dominated by hip hop and R&B artists, with a few pop artists rounding out the list.
So does this mean that rock is gone for good? Not exactly. Rock seemingly fizzled in the ’70s when disco became popular, but it resurfaced in bands like Guns N’Roses, Metallica and Van Halen.
Rap’s first wave of national popularity made stars out of acts like Run-D.M.C. and the Beastie Boys. But then the transition from classic rock to modern rock in the ’90s and 2000s saw rock bands such as the Killers and the White Stripes create iconic songs like “Mr. Brightside” and “Seven Nation Army.” Although rock acts from that era aren’t as popular as the used to be, many people can recognize some of the most popular songs.
Most songs played on the radio today are rap or pop, but rock groups still have a large following. New groups like the Arctic Monkeys and the Black Keys are still capable of filling arenas and have a huge fanbase.
Despite rock’s dwindling popularity, it is still a fairly important part of music culture and the music industry. Rock music has briefly dipped in popularity several times before over the past three decades, and it could make a future comeback.
Rock is here to stay, and although it is not currently the most popular genre, it has had a great influence on music culture and history, and it still produces great music today.
