Golvash, Shannon lead hockey team to playoff win
February 27, 2019
Senior Andrew Golvash had two goals and senior goalie Cole Shannon earned a shutout as the Baldwin ice hockey team beat Moon Township, 3-0, on Tuesday night in their first-round playoff game.
Golvash scored one in the second period and one at the beginning of the third. Junior Justin Pollard scored Baldwin’s third goal with seven minutes left in the game.
Shannon stopped more than 20 shots during the game. He said the win was satisfying for the entire team.
“No one thought that we would even make it to playoffs, and it’s really cool to win our first playoff game 3-0,” Shannon said.
Senior Ross Zofcin agreed.
“We lost to Moon earlier in the season, but we were missing guys, so we felt relieved to beat them,” Zofcin said.
Baldwin’s next playoff game will be Monday against Upper Saint Clair at Ice Castle. USC was the top-ranked team in Baldwin’s conference during the regular season, but the Highlanders defeated the Panthers both times the teams played this year.
The playoff win over Moon should give the Highlanders confidence, Shannon said.
“It was really important to get the first win, so we can beat Upper Saint Clair,” Shannon said.
Zofcin said the team knows what it will take to get another win.
“We are going to keep playing the same way we have been playing, and keep up our game, especially for our seniors,” Zofcin said.
