On Friday, Baldwin’s Outreach Club will have a Day of Silence to help raise awareness for the LGBTQ community.

Club member senior Aubrey Shaw explained why she thinks it’s important for Baldwin to participate in this national event.

“The LGBTQ community has been continually shut down and told to keep quiet about their feelings.The Day of Silence is a meaningful way for everyone to protest the issue,” Shaw said.

Until three years ago, Baldwin’s Diversity Club had run the Day of Silence each year at the high school. However, when the club ended, so did Baldwin’s participation in the Day of Silence. The members of the Outreach Club want to bring back the tradition.

On Friday the Outreach Club will have a table set up by the art display cases for students to sign up to participate in the Day of Silence. Participants will be given a bag with pieces of paper will simple phrases on it so that they will be able to communicate without speaking throughout the day.

Signs will be posted around the school, promoting the event. Teachers will also be able to hang signs on their doors to show their support for the cause.

Outreach club sponsor Rebecca Michalski is happy that club members wanted to bring back Day of Silence.

“The students brought it to my attention that they wanted to bring back Day of Silence,” Michalski said. “I think it’s a really good idea. It allows other students to see what it’s like to be part of the LGBTQ community.”

Shaw is optimistic about participation.

“I hope that people will join and partake in such an important action to help support the LGBTQ community,” Shaw said.

The Outreach Club will have a celebration after school on Friday in Room 303.
