Royal weddings grab attention of America
April 17, 2018
Another royal couple will tie the knot on May 19, as Prince Harry will marry Meghan Markle.
It is no secret that America is not run by a monarchy, and that freedom is so important to Americans. So what’s the deal with the U.S. obsession over British royal weddings?
It may be that Markle is an American actress — from USA network’s show “Suits” — and she is easily recognizable. Or it may be that Americans are in love with the idea of love.
Most little girls dream of being a princess and having an amazing puffy princess dress, but actually seeing someone fulfill this dream is hard to ignore.
Also, famous weddings always have been media attention-grabbers. When Beyonce and Jay-Z announced their wedding date, the media coverage was unbelievable and every media site had some sort of news on the big day.
This royal wedding will be analyzed from all angles, from the wedding dress itself to the flower bouquets.
It is also big news that the couple in question is asking all guests only to donate money to charity instead of buying gifts. This announcement has ensured that Markle will be Britain’s new “People’s Princess.”
The wedding is to take place in St.George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle. It will be much more low key than the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton, because the Chapel can only accommodate 800 people, while the Westminster Abbey, which was used for Kate and William’s wedding, can hold 2,000 people.
Prince Harry and Markle will say “I do” at midday in Britain and then have a procession in the carriage. That means it will begin at 7 a.m. here, but Americans have been getting up early to watch royal weddings as far back as Princess Diana’s wedding in 1981.
If Markle was just a “normal” American, then adjusting to the popularity and public life in England would be very difficult. Some think she may not be able to handle such a public life, but with her experience in Hollywood, she should have no trouble adjusting to royal life.
It is really exciting seeing a fairy tale ending, especially when there is so much violence and fear in the world today. This wedding brings hope and joy to everyone in England, but also in America.
