College basketball season more unpredictable than ever

The regular season of NCAA basketball usually greatly differs from the uncertainty on the March Madness tournament. It is usually dominated by just three or four teams, making the top-tier schools clearly evident.

But that isn’t the case this year.

At this point of the season, the top seeds for the tourney are usually almost set, but this year there is more uncertainty than in any recent years. Top teams are falling in the rankings weekly. In the last week, five of the top 10 teams lost to lower-ranked teams.

In past years there have been powerhouses like Kentucky, Duke and Kansas, but these teams have not been anywhere near as consistent as they have been in the last three years.

Kentucky has fallen out of the rankings for the first time since 2014. Duke has just lost to a very underachieving St. John’s and rival North Carolina in the last week and a half. Kansas is in second in the Big 12, a conference they have won every year since 2004.

These are just some of the usually strong teams that are having trouble winning games. The playing field is a lot more even than usual, which is going to create some great battles for regular-season conference championships.

This also could set up one of the craziest tournaments in NCAA history. It seems as though any team can beat a top team on any given night. There is a potential for some great upsets in the tournament, and there could be a very surprising national champion in April.
