Will Pens make move at trade deadline?
February 12, 2018
The 2017-2018 NHL season has been light on trading, but due to the unsuccessful runs by teams like the Montreal Canadiens and New York Rangers, things may heat up soon.
Now that the Feb. 26 trade deadline is nearing, it is crunch time for teams in their rush to make the playoffs.
It has been made clear that the Rangers will be a seller for this year’s deadline, looking to deal away many of their important players. Multiple general managers have reported that they would like to “rent” veterans like the Rangers’ Rick Nash and captain Ryan McDonagh.
However, another topic that has come up often — not in just Pittsburgh, but also throughout the NHL — is what Penguins GM Jim Rutherford will be doing at the deadline.
Rutherford has been telling Pittsburgh fans that he will attempt to regain the depth that the Penguins had last year in Nick Bonino and Matt Cullen, who both departed in free agency this past offseason.
Now that early additions such as center Riley Sheahan and defenseman Jamie Oleksiak are finding their game, the Penguins have had more success than their atrocious first half of the season.
Rutherford may be looking toward sending veteran defenseman Kris Letang to the Canadiens to acquire young center Alex Galchenyuk or scoring winger Max Pacioretty, but fans will have to wait until later this month to possibly see a move.
