As dystopian movies and novels fade in popularity, one concern has been whether this also would mean the disappearance of the kinds of strong female characters that dominated the genre.

Fortunately, this has not been the case, as those types of characters seem to be quickly making appearances in much different realms now.

The trend of strong female characters in dystopian stories created quite the response from audiences, with young girls hanging up posters of Katniss Everdeen and some even taking up archery. Movie producers quickly realized that these female leads are strong role models for teen and pre-teen audiences: The Hunger Games made an impressive $694.4 million in box office sales.

But even without the dystopian themes, strong female characters have continued to rise and bring in profits from different storylines.

Wonder Woman, which was released in June, emphasized the enduring appeal of strong female characters, racking up $821.9 million in box office sales. Wonder Woman became another character young girls could look up to, providing the same type of inspirational appeal that characters in the dystopian movies provided in the past.

Rey, a female character introduced in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and central to the most recent Star Wars movie, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, is another strong female character providing the inspirational appeal audiences search for. Rey fights for what she believes in and doesn’t give up, which are both qualities that young audiences especially admire.

Eleven, or El, from the Netflix original series Stranger Things, may be the recent character that illustrates the most similarities to characters from dystopian films. El targets the younger teenage audiences that most dystopian films had. Like Wonder Woman, she obtains supernatural abilities that enhance her character’s power.

Based on each of the qualities the three characters obtain, Wonder Woman, Rey, and Eleven are each strong characters who continue to thrive and pull in audiences even without a dystopian platform.

While it’s safe to say that dystopian movies have fallen out of favor, the characters within that audiences have come to love and look up to still make appearances in more modern TV shows and movies.
